A group of words that makes complete sense is called the sentence.

For example: A girl is singing the song.

Kinds of Sentence

There are five kinds of the sentence:

  1. Assertive Sentence
  2. Interrogative Sentence
  3. Exclamatory Sentence
  4. Imperative Sentence
  5. Optative Sentence

1. Assertive Sentence

A sentence that makes an assertion or statement is called an Assertive Sentence. It starts with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. (For example, The sun rises in the east.)

2. Interrogative Sentence

A sentence that asks a question is called an Interrogative Sentence. It starts with a capital letter and ends with an Interrogation/Question mark (?) (For example, Where do you live?)

3. Exclamatory Sentence

A sentence that expresses sudden or strong feelings such as joy, sorrow, anger, surprise, etc. is called Exclamatory Sentence. An Exclamatory Sentence ends with an exclamation mark(!). (For example, Wow! How beautiful a flower this is.)

4. Imperative Sentence

A sentence that expresses command, request, or entreaty is called an Imperative Sentence. It ends with a full stop. (For example, Please help.)

5. Optative Sentence

A sentence that expresses a prayer, wish, curse, blessing, or other sentiments is called an Optative Sentence. (For example, May god bless you.)
